Curriculum

Programs aboard the Spirit of South Carolina are designed around an interdisciplinary curriculum that focuses on math, science, English language arts, and social studies.  All activities taught aboard tied to South Carolina state standards and are designed to be hands-on. 

There are currently 19 activities offered aboard the Spirit of SC:

Life Science:

  • Water Quality: An Investigation of Abiotic Factors of an Ecosystem
  • Plankton Identification and Importance
  • Food Web and Trophic Structure

Physical Science:

  • Navigation: Study of Motion, Speed, and Direction
  • The Theory of Gravity and Buoyancy
  • Sail Theory: An Investigation of Friction and Motion
  • Simple Machines and Mechanical Advantage

Earth Science:

  • Waves and Tides
  • Coastal Processes and Geologic Features
  • Human Impact and Run-Off
  • Weather
  • Hydrologic Cycle

English Language Arts:

  • Maritime Dramatics
  • Maritime Poetry

Social Studies:

  • Slave Trade
  • Regional Maritime History – Careers
  • Regional Maritime History – Robert Smalls
  • Regional Maritime History – Fort Sumter and the First Shots of the Civil War
  • Historical Trade and Navigation
