Partnerships & Curricula
Our educational
programming concept is to collaborate and partner with existing
youth programs, educational institutions, organizations and foundations
in South Carolina and surrounding regions, which have youth constituencies.
We are seeking educational and youth development partners who believe
in the positive life changing experience which a sailing school
ship can provide. The general target age range is 11-21 years old.
We will jointly develop diverse, compelling and innovative programs
that meet the specific interests, needs, goals and objectives of
the education-at-sea partners we embrace. Examples of potential education-at-sea
partnerships are: school systems, private high schools, public charter
schools, public and private foundations, colleges and universities,
scout programs, sea cadets, boys and girls clubs, sailing organizations,
youth-at-risk programs, National Science Foundation, National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration, National Park Service, maritime and
cultural museums, orphanages, and others.
SCMHF will provide the planning staff to develop educational programs
with our partners and provide a professionally managed vessel which
will be crewed and configured to meet the needs of the specific program.
The vessel will provide an experience of shipboard life. A traditional
ship command structure will be maintained at all times. All sailors
will be given the opportunity to participate as part of the crew
at a level commensurate with their age and ability.
Some examples of education-at-sea programming:
- After school sailing
programs with at-risk youth
- Specialty programs for orphans,
abused children and the physically disabled
- Father/son weekend
expeditions with focus on building leadership
- Team-building workshops
on the coast
- Girls at sea - building confidence and leadership
- Leadership training
with teens
- Marine science programs with college students
- Educator expeditions
to Bermuda with environmental research
