Spirit Ocean Adventure Update - Day 3

July 07, 2010

This morning everyone's sea legs and stomachs were tested as we approached the Gulf Stream. Even the novice sailors could tell when we entered the Stream, as the choppy seas began to lay down and we were able to stop "helping" our sails with the engines.

Despite battling seasickness this morning, everyone has maintained a positive attitude and been able to eat Miss Laura's delicious meals and snacks. Now that we have been underway for more than twenty-four hours, our student crew is starting to get into the rhythm of the ship, it is great to watch them start to grasp the importance of even little things when living and working together in our small space.

Tonight's update is from participant Stephanie W:
As we've gotten underway, the days seem to grow longer. Last night, having the dawn watch was tough at first as we were all trying to concentrate with the glowing stars and the magnificent sunrise. This afternoon we had a meeting called Daily Almanac, which we later found out would happen daily, as hinted in the title. During Daily Almanac, we discuss ship's business, get a report, then begin learning activities. Today's activities were journaling about first experiences aboard and learning about science . Today we talked about water currents, winds, and temperatures related to the Gulf Stream.

This evening while some of us were hanging out on deck telling jokes, we realized we have a stowaway! The sparrow, now named Mr. Orne, flew around and stretched his wings in the breeze. As the day turns to night, the watches are switching, and we continue on our journey towards Bermuda.
