It has been a beautiful day off of the Carolina coastline. We set out at 8:30 this morning with students from Charleston Collegiate for a second three-day adventure. Before leaving the dock, the students had a chance to share their goals for the trip, including things like steering successfully, learning how to handle a large sailing vessel, being comfortable at sea, becoming closer to classmates, and team building. We have made great progress on these goals already. As usual, we spent the first morning in orientation and practicing drills. This afternoon we rotated through three watch stations: deck, education, and siesta. In deck watch, the students took turns at the helm and bow watch, did boat checks, and handled the sails for a number of tacks. In the education watch, the mates and deckhands taught their watch weather, knots, and the ins and outs of tacking. Siesta watch may have been the highlight, as napping, reading, and laying in the sun are always a welcome treat!
Till tomorrow,
Head Educator, Beth Spencer
