CHARLESTON, S.C. (January 22, 2010) – The South Carolina Maritime Foundation is hosting a sponsorship drive to support the Spirit Ocean Adventure Scholarship Fund. Purchase a $25 ticket to be entered to win a sail for 18 people aboard the Spirit of South Carolina for three days and two nights. This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sail aboard the 140-foot tall ship, Spirit of South Carolina. Possible voyages include roundtrips from Boston in August 2010, Rhode Island in September 2010 or Charleston in the fall of 2010. The winner will be announced on the final day of Charleston Race Week on April 11, 2010 at Mount Pleasant’s Patriot’s Point. A minimum of 1,000 tickets must be sold and while this sail includes room and board, it does not include transportation to and from the vessel.

All net proceeds fund scholarships for the Foundation’s summer program, Spirit Ocean Adventure. During the summer of 2010 two sessions of this life-changing program are available for teens ages 15 -18. While aboard participants are active members of the crew, immersed in all aspects of shipboard life. Under the guidance of a professional crew these teens will stand watch, navigate and ultimately assume command of the Spirit of South Carolina, all while embarking on a journey of self discovery.
